Types of Fire Extinguishers We Service

There are various types of fire extinguishers in the market, each designed to combat specific classes of fire. It is critical to have a better understanding of these classes and their corresponding extinguishers for effective fire suppression. The five classes of fire and their respective extinguishers are discussed below:

Class A

This class of fire involves combustible materials like wood, paper, and textiles. Typically, water fire extinguishers are used in extinguishing Class A fires. They cool the fire and remove heat from the fuel. Water fire extinguishers are in color red and have an attached distinct nozzle or hose. This nozzle or hose allows controlled and targeted water application onto the fire. Keep in mind that water fire extinguishers are not for fires involving electrical equipment or flammable liquids.

Class B

Flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, and solvents, are the primary causes of Class B fires. Foam extinguishers are specifically made to combat these types of fires. The foam used here consists of a mixture of water and a specialized foam concentrate. When discharged, the pressurized solution in the extinguishers is expelled and projected onto the fire. When the solution meets the fire, it expands and forms a thick foam layer. The foam rapidly covers the fire, suppressing it through fuel cooling thus preventing flammable vapor release.

Class C

Fires that involve live electrical equipment are under Class C. The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguishers is recommended to combat these fires. CO2 is a non-conductive gas, meaning it does not conduct electricity. This makes it ideal for extinguishing Class C fires because it prevents further electrical damage or harm to the user. CO2 fire extinguishers do not conduct electricity and can extinguish the fire with no harm to the user or further damage to the equipment.

Class D

This class involve combustible metals including titanium, sodium, and magnesium. Powder fire extinguishers are for metal fires as they suppress this type of fire. These equipment prevent the necessary chemical reaction for the fire sustenance. They can be used on various metal fires, making them a valuable tool in industrial and manufacturing settings with combustible metals.

Class K

Class K fires involve cooking oils and fats, which is commonly found in kitchens. Specialized wet chemical fire extinguishers are essential in extinguishing these fires. Miami Fire Suppression Experts offer wet chemical fire extinguishers as part of our comprehensive fire protection services. These specialized extinguishers manage fires involving cooking oils and fats. Their unique composition allows them to effectively suppress and extinguish these fires by creating a cooling effect and forming a barrier to prevent re-ignition.
